IGN Video Review

No More Heroes tones down the insanity from Grasshopper Manufacture?s last console title, Killer 7, with a plot that?s fairly easy to follow and characters that are still eccentric, but not freakish (at least most of the time), while putting the gameplay into a more enjoyable place. So it?s more accessible, and yup, it?s a better game for it.

No More Heroes is practically two entirely different games mashed together. One is a funny, smart, stylish action game that never fails to entertain. The other is an open-world game that fails so completely in every regard that, despite all appearances, it's easier to question the developer's intent than it is to accept that it's what they were going for.
Fortunately, you barely have to play that second game to enjoy the first one.

Is No More Heores perfect? Not quite. The open world of Santa Destroy feels less like a bustling Liberty City and more like a ghost town, with places of interest spread around vast expanses of nothing. Travis?s motorbike, the Schpeltiger, drives like a girder with a jet engine on the back (which may be intentional). And the camera can get a little janky in tight quarters. Those minor quibbles aside, No More Heroes is the blood-soaked, stylish action game Wii owners have been waiting for.[/b]
Ultimately, you?ll probably look at No More Heroes?s peculiarities as either inherent flaws, justifiably, or accept them as deliberate design decisions. Think Silent Hill 2?s purposefully debilidating combat and endless procession of locked doors. Similarly to Konami?s horror opus, in fact, the more you invest in exploring No More Heroes?s minutiae, the more you?ll get out of its singular mode of story telling ? there?s barely a lump of on-screen furniture or intentionally duff moment here that doesn?t have some relevance to proceedings. True enough, that doesn?t always make for the most riveting gameplay experience by design but anyone who lives for creativity ? and indeed games that dare experiment with an entire lifetime of clich?s and conventions ? would be foolish to miss Grasshopper's relentlessly inventive, uniquely entertaining Wii debut.
Presentation 9.0
Consistently creative and inarguably stylish. Some will justifiably hate NMH's post-modern approach and others will embrace it with gusto.
Graphics 7.5
Open world pop-up, merky textures and variable framerates niggle but hardly detract from the game's stellar art style and creative design.
Sound 8.5
Over-the-top voice work is perfectly complemented by an incredible score and some really weird sound effects.
Gameplay 8.0
Intentionally tedious sequences and deliberate bad design in places may rankle some, but combat is deep and intensely satisfying.
Lasting Appeal 8.0
Unless you're a sucker for menial tasks, you'll probably stick to the main game. Twelve hours, sound okay to you?
OVERALL 8.9 Great
