Not a Port! PC Will Be Lead Platform for Watch Dogs
Now consoles gamers will be on the other end of the port process for once, with the news that Ubisoft is developing the open-world title Watch Dogs using PC as the lead platform. When questioned why they took this route, the quintessential Frenchman, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, noted the major changes between the next generation of consoles and the previous. No more crappy ports!
During an interview with Inside Gamer, Guillemot told the Dutch magazine, “ We expect fewer problems with porting games to the PS4 than the PS3, which had a completely different infrastructure. Previously, we developed games first on the Xbox 360 and then translated them onto the PS3. It took a lot of time and money to port.”
Now that consoles are moving more towards a PC infrastructure (seriously, look at the PS4 specs if you have not already), this will likely be a much more common route for developers. The AMD-based architecture of the PS4 means that it makes more sense to develop for the PC, and then port it over to consoles. We have not seen the official Xbox 720 tech, but leaked info points to a similar 8-core AMD CPU, which is a good sign as well.
Although Ubisoft had previously been struggling to keep PC gamers happy with their always-on requirements and other DRM restrictions (most of which they dropped), it looks like they have turned over a new leaf and realized that the PC will be a very important part of their future. Lets hope this promising trend continues and we get the quality titles we deserve.
Do you think this is the start of a long-term trend, or do your believe PC will continue getting the short end of the stick with AAA titles?
The delay bug hits another huge title once again, and this time around, it's Ubisoft's action-adventure title, Watch Dogs: Legion. The upcoming Watch Dogs: Legion multiplayer mode would have added some much needed endgame content for a game currently lacking in replay value. Unlike other delays though, Watch Dogs: Legion has already been released. It already...
