Unusually, Famitsu also revealed details on the overseas release of the sequel, which is apparently already in the works. According to the dev interview printed in the issue, the game is due out worldwide for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 by the end of this year, although it'll remain a PS3 excusive in Japan. Namco Bandai Games will handle publishing duties in both the US and Europe this time around.
Dark Souls is set to offer similar action as Demon's Souls, a game praised for its freedom of exploration, character customization, and extreme challenge level. The new game has no story connection to Demon's, but it'll offer a much larger world and much more complex geography to explore. The world will also be seamless, so instead of choosing regions to hack through, you'll play on a single, large game map.

Character creation will be more fluid, and instead of choosing a class at the start of the game, you'll be able to customize your hero in different, deeper ways. Co-op and competitive online features are set to make a return as well, expanding on the system in Demon's that let you view the final moments of fellow players.

Previously the game sported the working title "Project Dark", but according to the latest issue of Japanese game magazine Famitsu, the game is now called "Dark Souls". Spiritual successor, perhaps, but the world and the story are unrelated to Demon's Souls.

Demon's Souls was a PS3 exclusive, while medieval fantasy Dark Souls is for both the PS3 and the Xbox 360.

The game will have large areas that can be explored, so if players see, for example, a field in the distance, then they will be able to make their way there and have a look around. However, players will not be provided with a complete map in this open world, but only a marker that shows where they currently are. The entire world is conjoined, and there isn't a "hub" like in Demon's Souls that linked the five different worlds. Areas won't be only be horizontally expansive, but also vertically so. Thus, the focus on exploration is increased in Dark Souls.

Compared to Demon's Souls, Dark Souls will allow more freedom in how players play. When players create their character, their character will not be class-based. The game offers a wide variety of different weapons (and weapon animation) as well as spells and in-game items. Players are invited to fully explore their own play style — as opposed to having an assigned one.

Online-wise, the game has online play that's similar to Demon's Souls with co-op play and versus play. In the online mode, which won't have dedicated servers, players can see where other players died and leave messages. There is also "mutual role-playing", which will be explained in greater depth at a later date.

Dark Souls sounds easy? It's apparently not. The developers are trying to make something as challenging as Demon's Souls — and just as rewarding for players. As with Demon's Souls, the themes are "learn from one's mistakes and take delight in discovery". The developers are happy that Demon's Souls was so well received abroad, and Dark Souls is slated for release this year in both Japan and the West.

    Discuss .

Dark Souls, the spiritual successor to notoriously difficult role-playing game Demon's Souls, is guaranteed to be even more punishing. So says Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki, who also reveals that players—not just giant wolves and zombie dragons—will be inflicting more pain on each other. Miyazaki explains in the new issue of Edge magazine that the game's messaging system that lets players leave helpful tips and warnings to other Dark Souls players can also be harmful. That was true of Demon's Souls, in a sense, as some players dropped disinformation from time to time.

But Dark Souls will reportedly feature a "keener competitive edge," with players seeing real benefit from actively tricking their fellow players. "It's how you play with people's minds, how you help or trick other people," Miyazaki tells Edge. "It's not necessarily about how skilled you are, but how smart you are."
Players will also be encouraged—perhaps forced—to attack other players online. Miyazaki explains that we "may be tasked with hunting down a certain item that another has in his or her possession."

"It's usually posed a bit like a competitive version of Lord of the Rings in which one player has the ring and the other characters must find him, attack him and attempt to claim the ring for themselves," he says. Demon's Souls put players in the position of player-versus-player combat during a fight in which players assume the role of a major boss, the Old Monk. But it appears that Dark Souls will explore this notion even further.

Still unexplained is how some of the content that requires players to be online will work for players without an in-game internet connection (read: Xbox Live Silver members).

Dark Souls' difficulty will be ratcheted up with another new aspect: the degradation of the player's mind. Characters will mentally suffer to the point where they may devolve into a "zombie or monster" in Dark Souls.

There's more information in the pages of the latest Edge, including Dark Souls' unusual approach to an ending, which is out at newsstands this week.
Dark Souls is coming to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 later this year, courtesy of From Software and publisher Namco Bandai.
